Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea accompanies Pieter Hugo's survey exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany. Essays are by the museum's director Ralf Beil and curator Uta Ruhkamp. The monograph spans 13 years, from Looking Aside (2003-6) through to the previously unpublished Californian Wildflowers (2014-15, taken in San Francisco and Los Angeles) and the 2015-16 Beijing work, Flat Noodle Soup Talk. Each body of work is introduced by a short text by the artist. According to the museum:
More artist than anthropologist or documentarian, Hugo captures the “moment of voluntary vulnerability” (Pieter Hugo) with a pronouncedly detached, but at the same time also empathetic, concise visual language, creating in this way true to life portraits of powerful directness.
