Jane Alexander, Wim Botha, Steven Cohen, Simon Gush, Pieter Hugo, Mawande Ka Zenzile, Moshekwa Langa, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Deborah Poynton and Penny Siopis feature in We, the People: 30 Years of Democracy in South Africa at the Norval Foundation. Curated by Liese van der Watt, the exhibition frames the country's democratic journey as a 'an ongoing process'. 

Steven Cohen at Midlands Arts Centre

Steven Cohen takes part in the 2024 Fierce Festival at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham, with his performance of put your heart under your feet...and walk! In this performance where he 'invites the public to celebrate love with him, and to engage in a dialogue with death', Cohen 'conducts a ritual of rare power dedicated to the memory of his late companion, Elu. In 2017, death separated the two men after 20 years of living together. Cohen turned to art to deal with the loss, transforming pain and absence into an imagistic ode.'

Steven Cohen in Paris

Steven Cohen takes part in the Transforme festival in Paris at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale with his performance of Boudoir. Taking inspiration from the boudoir as a traditionally bourgeoise room reserved for feminine conversations, Cohen, through performative installations makes it into a place of new-found and affirmed liberty through the drawing together of sexuality and philosophy, intimacy and a social critique of restrictive dogmas and powers. 


Performances will take place on 4 October and 6 October 2024. 

Steven Cohen at Haus der Kulturen der Welt

Steven Cohen and donna Kukama will be in conversation at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. ‘The artists reflect on Cohen’s trajectory as an unapprehended outlaw with a practice that persistently perpetuates the act of trespassing, stretching the conventions of what is allowed in public space, and expanding on the lineages of performance art in the context of South Africa and beyond.’

Works by Steven Cohen, Simon Gush, Aziz Hazara, Moshekwa Langa, Paulo Nazareth, Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi, Penny Siopis are included in Sowing Watermelon Seeds a curated programme by 16/16 running parallel to the Lagos Biennial that features screenings and workshops on international solidarity.

Steven Cohen tours his new performance-installation, Boudoir at Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne, Switzerland; Festival d’Automne, Centre Pompidou, Paris and Théâtre National de Bretagne, Rennes, France. The work 'reveals how inner conflicts, representations and the law are interwoven'.

'From Outside In'

'From Outside In', a collaborative effort between Steven Cohen and three young artists, will be presented on the 12th and 13th of July in the Théâtre National de Bretagne, Rennes. Each of the three artists will perform alongside Cohen's performance of his new version of iBall.

The festival is well known for its four pillars of performance, workshops, research and the party programme Soçial. Cohen will also perform Taste at ImPulsTanz X Museum on 27 and 29 July.

Various artists in IncarNations at BOZAR

Edson Chagas, Steven Cohen, Nandipha Mntambo, Zanele Muholi, Pieter Hugo and Barthélémy Toguo are included in IncarNations: African Art as Philosophy, initiated by Kendell Geers in dialogue with collector Sindika Dokolo. Held at BOZAR Centre for Arts, the show looks at work from the region as 'a living philosophical practice'.

The work is meditation on loss, grief and absence, following the death of Cohen’s partner and artistic collaborator Elu; it comprises of performance, projections and an installation of sculptural objects.

put your heart under your feet...and walk! by Steven Cohen will be presented at KLAP Maison pour la danse as part of a programme titled 'De Genres'. The performance later travels to Switzerland where Cohen will present it at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne from 23 to 25 March. 

Steven Cohen at Dance Umbrella

Steven Cohen presents his performance of put your heart under your feet ... and walk! - a tribute to his late partner, the dancer Elu - for the first time in South Africa at Dance Umbrella 2018. The work premiered at the 37th Montpellier Danse Festival and will show in Johannesburg at the Wits Theatre.

Steven Cohen and Zanele Muholi at Transpalette Centre d'Art

Steven Cohen and Zanele Muholi are included in Traversées Ren@rde at Transpalette Centre d'Art. The exhibition is part of a countrywide celebration of the Pompidou Centre's 40th anniversary, and includes multidisciplinary artists who have formed part of the Pompidou's history. Cohen will perform at Transpalette on 16 December.

Steven Cohen was included in the 37th Montpellier Danse Festival. His performance put your heart under your feet ... and walk/à Elu combined visual art, performance, video, sound, dance and ballet in a tribute to Elu, his late partner and collaborator.

Edson Chagas, Steven Cohen and Nandipha Mntambo had work in Disguise: Masks and Global African Art at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, after showing at the Seattle Art Museum and the Fowler Museum of Cultural History, Los Angeles, in 2015.
