STEVENSON is pleased to announce Tropic of Capricorn, a solo exhibition by Moshekwa Langa.

For his third exhibition with the gallery, Langa introduces new large-scale works on canvas alongside mixed-media collages, portraits and spectral paintings on paper.

The Tropic of Capricorn, according to the cartography of South Africa, falls across the artist’s home province of Limpopo. Having spent the last few years living between Paris and Amsterdam, Langa has lately established a home and studio in Johannesburg, at which he produced the works in this exhibition. Of this new chapter within his ongoing psycho-geographic mapping project, Langa remarks that Tropic of Capricorn articulates a further dimension of precarity in his conception of place, stating: ‘I’m still a fugitive. I suppose it’s all like coming homewards but there is also no home.’

The intimate and the remote are juxtaposed in Tropic of Capricorn; the oceanic motifs recurring across his abstract paintings are brought into sharper focus by the artist’s new explorations of cosmological imagery, and his portraits of relatives are exhibited in tandem with collages featuring recognisably domestic fragments of cardboard and plastic.

Tropic of Capricorn is Langa’s first exhibition in the city since Ellipses in 2016, and follows Fugitive in Johannesburg in 2017. Langa is also currently exhibiting in New York as part of a three-artist co-presentation by Stevenson and Andrew Kreps Gallery at 55 Walker Street, Tribeca.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 28 November, 6 to 8pm.

The gallery is open throughout the season, closing only on public holidays.
